1970 Maton CW80/6

Introduced in 1967, the Maton CW80/6 is ‘the’ classic Australian-made dreadnought.  Here we have a rare, exceptionally clean one-owner example, originally purchased from Foley’s music store in Newcastle, NSW.  Cosmetically restrained, but the warm golden tones of the body top / back /sides are outstanding.  Maton’s internal label indicates this guitar’s build date as December 1970, an exciting time in the emerging Aussie contemporary music scene. “CW” stands for Country Western, and this example certainly displays a warm, balanced tone, strong projection, and ease of playing for all styles of folk, country and country-rock settings. The top is X-braced solid Spruce while Maton’s choice of laminated Queensland Maple sides and subtly-arched back provides strength and responsiveness with exceptional light weight: just over 7lbs!  This guitar has been very well cared for over the years, with original frets at 70% height, currently smooth with no divots. The guitar shows some light playing wear marks on the top and back of the body while the neck is smooth and perfect. Action is 3mm at 12th fret low E and 2mm at high E at the 12th fret. The adjustable truss rod (accessed on the neck block via the sound hole) is fully functional. In summary: a rare opportunity to own a fine vintage example of one of Maton’s best traditional flat-top guitars, with its original hard case.
