Back in the 1960s, Albert Collins was one of the first well-known humbucker-in-the neck-position Tele players, with an intense tone that was influential in the blues and rock world. Currently the Fender USA Custom Shop can provide you with a recreation of Albert’s 1966 humbucker-equipped Tele for around AU$6,000+.
Meanwhile, over the years, Fender Japan have also independently released a series of ‘Artist Models’ from time to time, including this TL66B-AC (‘Telecaster 1966 Bound – Albert Collins) in 2006. It’s a great Albert Collins Telecaster is a great example, offering a special edition/custom shop level of fit and finish for a much more friendly price.
Unique features include a double-bound ‘Custom Telecaster’ style ash body and a maple neck with (period correct for 1966!) maple cap fretboard. The electronics feature a Seymour Duncan humbucker neck pickup and well-matched standard MIJ Tele bridge pickup, with powerful tone options available on each individual, or both, pickups. The neck is a fast C shape and the original frets show almost no wear. A very fine and tuneful Tele that fits the bill for country, blues, and blues-rock.
