Introduced in 1942, Gibson’s LG2 features an X-braced top with 14-1/8” body width, 4-1/4” body depth, and Gibson’s standard 24-3/4” scale length. In 1943, during the WW2 years, some LG2s were made with Mahogany rather than Spruce tops, some with Maple back and sides and some – including this example – with a one-piece Mahogany top, plus Mahogany back and sides. The top on this guitar has been repaired and refinished in traditional Gibson ‘Cremona’ two-tone burst. We believe the rectangular bridge is original, as it is a style sometimes seen on other 1940s LGs. The neck features a 1-3/4” nut width and the neck profile is a full D shape. The frets appear to be original, dressed and polished down to 60% height but playing well. The headstock, logo and original rivetted 3-on-a-plate Kluson tuners are all present and correct, with the original plastic tuner buttons functional and showing minimal shrinkage. The one-piece Mahogany top gives this guitar a very noticeable responsiveness, volume and sustain, unique among LGs that we have so far had the pleasure of playing. This light-weight, marvellous-sounding and rare ‘Banner LG2’ comes with a good quality Martin 00-size hardcase.
