Amwatts Penguin Reverb 5R
PreAmp: A single input, vintage style standard triode followed by a custom designed universal gain stage
fixed setting Bassman style tone stack – this is where Amwatts differs from conventional vintage preamps.
The concept was to use the classic Tweed Champ/Princeton input but feed it into a Bassman style tonestack
Tone: The single knob tone stack uses the classic Bassman Treble/Middle/Bass style gain stage but with the
settings set at a fixed level. We have studied the Tone Stack Calculator of the famous Bassman and come
up with our own recipe for the 3 knob setting. We then adapted it into a simple 1 knob tone control. So it’s
simply set it at our favourite setting for your classic Bassman tones. Wind it off for more bass or turn it up for
more top end. It combines the TMB tone controls into a single knob and has been designed to work with both
Single Coil and Humbucker style pickups.
Master Volume: 5 watts RMS can still get pretty loud, especially with the volume the Amwatts Penguin can
provide. This is where the fun begins and makes the original tweed Champ/Princeton design more useable . Our
MV is placed on the output tube and attenuates the signal that hits the 6V6 output tube. SO you can play with
both the Input Volume AND Master Volume to achieve a variety of clean/overdriven tones.
Add to that the adjustment on your guitars volume control and you can fine tune the variations in tone to your
personal taste.
The Amwatts Penguin and Penguin Reverb turn the Vintage Tweed Champ/Princeton
circuits from a one trick pony into a versatile amp for both home and studio use
Output: A Single 6V6GT output valve as used in all the vintage Single Ended low wattage amps from the 50’s,
but we couldn’t just copy it directly, We tightened up the bottom end signal feeding the output circuit .Amwatts
biases the 6V6GT to approx. 90- 100% dissipation unlike the 50’s counterparts which were over biased , This
gives more headroom and nicer bell like qualities to the tone plus adds longer life to the valves. Combine this
with a Jupiter 10” ceramic vintage style speaker and you have all the ingredients of yesteryear combined with
modern day versatility.
