Bacchus is a brand of Deviser, one of the smaller Matsumoto-based Japanese guitar makers. Between 1998 and 2025, the company created their “Vintage Series” including this “BSG-68V’ model, based on the large-pickguard 1968 Gibson SG. The serial number on this example dates to 2003.
Checking the specs from Deviser, we encounter several notable features: a one-piece African Mahogany body, very tidy set neck construction, a traditional 43mm (1-11/16″) nut width, medium C neck profile, Maple neck with dark Rosewood, smooth bound fretboard with trapezoid pearl inlays, nickel-plated hardware and Gotoh tulip button tuners. We believe the finish to be nitro celullose. Unlike most Japanese makers, Deviser made their own pickups, and this guitar is fitted with their ‘VH-59’ humbuckers, which are strong and detailed. The guitar weighs 6.5 lbs and is a pleasure to play. The only issues are some hazing on headstock overlay and 3 knob inlays missing.
