Maxim Lap Steel with Amp-in-Case c.1950
Peter McCarthy was a guitarist and electronics professional who created ‘Maxim’ guitars and amps in his workshop in Melbourne, from the late 1940s through to the 1970s. There’s an excellent article about him here: Maxim Amplifiers – Peter McCarthy – RickVeneer . The lap steel guitar has a 22″ scale length and strong handwound pickup plus vol and tone controls all functional under the chrome coverplate. It looks and sounds very similar to a vintage Epiphone or Gibson lap steel. Meanwhile, with a recent full service and safety check plus new 6″speaker, the amp works well and sounds great, reminiscent of a Fender Champ in volume and tone. All together a very cool and perfectly functional historic lap steel/amp/case set, at a nice price!
