Maxim Lap Steel with Amp-in-Case c.1950
A professional guitarist in the Melbourne ABC radio orchestra who studied electronics, Peter McCarthy built ‘Maxim’ guitars and amps and in his workshop in Melbourne, from the late 1940s through to the 1970s. And in this instance a Lap Steel with its matching amp-in-the-case. There’s an excellent article about Peter here: Maxim Amplifiers – Peter McCarthy – RickVeneer This lap steel guitar from around 1950 has a 22″ scale length wooden body with heavy-duty machined chrome plated hardware parts, plus a very strong pickuphandwound nin house, with vol and tone controls on the chrome coverplate. It looks and sounds very similar to a vintage Epiphone or Gibson lap steel. A recent full service and safety check plus new 6″speaker confirms that the amp works well and sounds great, reminiscent of a Fender Champ in volume and tone. All together a very cool and perfectly functional historic lap steel/amp/case set, at a nice price!
